Experienced Immigration Lawyer Serving Clients in Los Angeles, Orange & Ventura Counties, the San Francisco Area, & Across the US

Every year, millions of people apply for benefits from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In just 2021 alone, 9.1 million people applied for asylum, naturalization, lawful permanent residency (LPR), visas, and more. Of those applicants, the USCIS granted LPR to over half a million people, citizenship to more than 800,000, and asylum to just over 38,000.

While many individuals successfully obtain legal residence in the US, there are thousands of people removed from the US each year. In 2020, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report indicated that the US repatriated or expelled a combined 613,000 individuals. Additionally, the US detained 183,000 immigrants and issued 210,000 notices to appear (NTA) at removal hearings.

The combined data show that the US’s immigration system is active in permitting individuals to legally enter and reside in the country, while also frequently taking action to remove those who have committed violations against criminal or immigration law. For people who are immigrants to the US, these statistics demonstrate how crucial it can be to retain an attorney for any issues with immigration law. Should a person want to become an LPR, for instance, an attorney can help them determine how to achieve this status and provide them with counsel and representation along the way. If a person receives an NTA from the DHS, as another example, an attorney can advocate for them in removal proceedings and help a respondent seek legal protection. Although it is not always possible for person involved an immigration case to seek the help of an attorney, it is a best practice for those who can access one.
